Higher inflows to money market funds accounted for much of the increase. This evolution had a cyclical component, as inflows recorded in January tend to make up for the outflows usually recorded at the end of each year. This said, with net sales of EUR 53 billion, money market funds recorded an unprecedented level of demand, higher than in the first quarter of 2003 when inflows had hit a record level of EUR 46 billion.
